Located in downtown St Paul, Minnesota the Xcel Energy Center is a sports arena sponsored by Xcel Energy and is home to the NHL's Minnesota Wild as well as NLL's Minnesota Swarm. Xcel Energy Center is owned by the city itslef (St Paul, Minnesota) and is operated by the owners of the Wild and Swarm "Minnesota Sports & Entertainment."
The Xcel Energy Center seats 18,064 people with four spectator levels: including 1 suite level, and 3 general seating areas (the 100 level, the club level, and the 200 level).
Opened initially fall 2000 The Xcel Energy Center's marketing team has been quoted by the Minneapolis StarTribune having said, "We hope that fans will call it 'The X'." The Xcel Energy Center replaced the demolished St. Paul Civic Center and in 2004, ESPN honored the Xcel Center claiming it the best all-around sports venue in the US.
On July 3, 2007 the 10 millionth person passed through the gates in attendance of the Police Reunion Tour seven years after the building first opened.
Recently in June, 2008, Senator Barack Obama gave his first speech at the XCel Energy Center as the presumptive presidential nominee for the Democratic Party. Over 17,000 people attended the event while an the other 15,000 watched jumbo screens right outside the arena.
Xcel Energy Center Features
- Xcel Energy Center's large concourses are up to 70 feet in width bringing a spectacular view of the main event. Each of the 4 levels were specifically designed for superior views of the Xcel's arena Center, which also brings us amazing acoustics.
- Five public gate entrances, one with a clock tower in the center of it.
Xcel Energy Center Multimedia Display
- State-of-the-art scoreboard featuring LED display and four 9’ x 16’ video boards.
- Ribbon board signage – 360-degree, full-color LED board that offers unlimited opportunities for messaging and creative branding.
Crows Nests
- Four interactive areas positioned in the arena’s interior corners – one is utilized for the famous “Let’s Play Hockey” announcement prior to the start of each Minnesota Wild game, one is home to an organ in the shape of a zamboni, and one in the shape of a lighthouse. The fourth is used for various entertainment opportunities during Wild games.
Light House
- The Xcel Energy Center lighthouse highlights the energy in the building, and with it’s blaring horn, becomes the focal point each time the Minnesota Wild scores a goal.
Dining & Refreshment Possibilities
Headwaters Bar and Restaurant
An exquisite bar and restaurant on the Club level which features elegant buffet style serving. The restaurant also offers a 360-degree bar, lounge and fireplace.
Iron Range Grill
A hockey themed sports bar, located near Gate 4 at Section 120 on the main level, complete with 40 televisions and State of Hockey memorabilia.
Nineteen concession stands offering a variety of offerings can be found throughout the building
The Phillips Old Time Hockey Lounge on the upper concourse offers special concoctions from the Minnesota-based distiller that warms the hockey spirit on cold winter nights.
